Cultural Body Modification: Nose plugs of Apatani women

Body modification is nothing new in the world of aesthetics and individuality. But it has been in existence since time past and it can be seen in Apatani women. The Apatani women are known for sporting bizarre nose plugs.

The Apatani tribe lives in the Ziro valley in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India's northeast. Apatani women were considered the most beautiful among the Arunachal tribes; so beautiful, in fact, that they had to make themselves look unattractive as protection from invaders from other tribes.
Hence, Apatani women wore large wooden plugs in their noses, a tradition not carried forward by the younger members of the 26,000 people- strong tribe today.

SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP: Facing difficulties positively

This parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells.
After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that
neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving.

Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!

This he did, blow after blow.
“Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up!” He repeated to
encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him . . . all because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity, then many of us wont fall by the road side in the journey of life.

Value and invest in yourself

If you are into financial investment, you’re probably very familiar with Mr. Warren Buffet (1951–present). He is the most successful investor
in the world. His investment strategies are legendary and many people seek to learn after him.

Even more respectable, he pledged to give away 99% of his wealth (more than $30 billions at the time of the pledge in 2006) to non-profit
foundations, mostly to Bill Gate’s Foundation.

Mr. Buffet often travels to universities to give speeches to educate and motivate students. Here is one of his speeches to teach us the value of our body, to invest in ourselves, in education for
a great future.

Imagine that a Genie offers you any car in the world. The catch is that it is the only car you will ever own. What would you do? You would read the manual ten times, change the oil twice as often as required, and you would take fastidious care so that that car remained the car of your dreams forever.
Think about what this tells you about your body.

You get only one mind and one body–the same ones you will have at 20, 40, 60, etc.
Take care of them and maximize their potential. It will be too late to take care of your body and mind (and car) later on. You can maintain them, but it is hard or impossible to undo big mistakes or negligence later on. You do not want to end up
with a wreck on your hands.

Your main asset in life is yourself.
Treat yourself as a valuable asset. I often explain to students that I would be willing to pay today for a percentage of the future earnings of good students.

If you value yourself, and invest in yourself, you will be worth a great deal through out your lifetime, both to yourself and to your community.

Weird Marriage Custom : Kidnap and Marry

Lotuko (also, Lotuka ) is an ethnic group in South Sudan . Their population exceeds 200,000. Their
traditional home is Equatoria area on Southern Sudan. They speak Otuho language , a Nilotic language .

This set of people has a very weird marriage tradition. If a guy wants to
marry a girl,he kidnaps her. After kidnapping, elderly people of his family go to girl’s father and ask for her hand. If girl’s father agrees he beats the guy as a symbol of acceptance and if he doesn’t agree, the kidnapper marries the girl
forcefully.

Now all the girls should thank God, they are not born in Lotuko.
